I have recently gone from a normal cell phone toting 20 something to a weirdo with only a skype account with an online number.
First, the change from being always available to only being able to take calls at home has actually been quite liberating. People know that they are best off to email me anyways, but this just hammers the point home, with me and my peek, I will respond to an email in a matter of minutes, where a phone call may take hours to reach me.
However cheap this may be (~ $5 a month for a number with unlimited minutes) it has presented me with some unique challenges. Most people just use skype on their computer, but seeing as it's my only phone, I decided that some redundancy was in order. The trouble is most phone adapters for skype require a windows computer (which I don't have). So I was forced to go with an entirely pc independent route. I bought a belkin wifi skype phone.
To be specific, this is what I bought:

I can save you $100 and some time right now though. The first one had to be replaced after only 2 days because it would no longer turn on. The replacement has decided to (with 6 different wireless networks) connect, and then disconnect every 30 seconds. This is annoying for two reasons. Obviously it's hard to finish a call in 30 seconds. Beyond that, the phone makes a mandatory sound both when it disconnects from skype, and when it re-connects, so there was a constant chorus of noise coming from whatever room it was that this phone was in. Very annoying.
Long story short, I sent it in for another replacement, and as soon as it arrives, it will find a place in my eBay "Sold" section.
Any suggestions from anybody on a decent pc free skype phone? Let me know.
